Preview a ‘taste’ of family business at one-of-a-kind dinner

From iconic brands to emerging chefs, family businesses represent them all — and will give a sampling of their work at an upcoming event.

Taste of Family Business has become a popular element of the annual conference for Prairie Family Business Association, which this year is April 30-May 1 at the Canopy by Hilton in downtown Sioux Falls.

The Taste event will be from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. April 30, with all menu items featuring ingredients and products from a dozen member family businesses. Each conference ticket includes a Taste of Family Business ticket. Additional tickets are $60.

“This quickly has become a favorite part of the event for our conference attendees, both as a way to sample the talent of family businesses but also to learn more about the stories behind them,” said Stephanie Larscheid, executive director of Prairie Family Business Association.

New this year, fans of the well-known brand Runza will have reason to look forward to the dinner. Based in Nebraska, Runza Restaurants is a new member of Prairie Family Business Association and is bringing a miniature version of its famed sandwich to the Taste event.

The family recipe combines ground beef, cabbage, onions and a mix of secret spices baked in a homemade bread.

“Our founder’s mother made them in her German kitchen,” said Ashley Ficken, human resources administrator.

Runza was founded in 1949 by Sarah “Sally” Everett as a car hop stand when it was hard to find jobs at World War II. Her son grew the business through franchising beginning in 1979, and there now are 91 locations in five states.

“We are excited to be able to attend the event and showcase our product,” Ficken said. “We have connected with PFBA through the useful webinars they put out, as well as participating in Affinity Peer Groups. We look forward to attending this event and connecting with other family businesses.”

Fifth-generation farmers the Overskei family will bring their famous pulled pork in a Cuban-style, bite-sized dish.

Joel and Donna Overskei,  along with their son, Clint, and his wife, Brandi, farm near Nunda.

“We take pride in our family farm,” Brandi Overskei said. “The family has always been very passionate about the hog operation, but we also raise cattle, corn, beans and hay. The pulled pork is a staple in our household, and we hope you enjoy it too.”

Baker Boy, based in Dickinson, North Dakota, marks 70 years in business this year and is returning to the Taste event.

The company produces more than 200 premium bakery products for food service, retail, convenience store and private label customers across the United States.

Its classic French baguettes will be used in a charcuterie board in partnership with Adee Honey Farms, as well as a brie crostini.

“Baker Boy has participated in this event before. Each time, it is an honor to showcase our products to other family business leaders in the region,” said Guy Moos, president and second-generation owner.

“Baker Boy has been a member of PFBA for many years. In addition to taking in the conference, we take part in the many webinars that they produce each year. Both my daughter, Melissa Moos, and I are part of Affinity Peer Groups as well.”

Adee Honey Farms will be returning for another year at the Taste of Family Business too.

Based in Bruce, the third-generation business began as a small operation in 1957 and has grown into the largest beekeeping operation in the United States.

“We’ve been honored to participate in the Taste of Family Business event over the years, and it’s always a pleasure to share our sweet honey with those experiencing it for the first time,” said Sarah Hauge, director of business development.

“Beyond the joy of connecting with new customers, the event has opened the door to valuable collaborations, meaningful partnerships and exciting new business opportunities that have supported our continued growth. We’re grateful for the chance to be part of a community that values family, tradition and quality — just like we do.”

The family has attended the PFBA conference for many years.

“Each time, we walk away with new tools, fresh ideas and a renewed sense of purpose, helping us strengthen our business today and set it up for success for future generations,” Hauge said.

“We also make it a point to take advantage of PFBA’s webinars and events throughout the year, always looking for ways to learn and grow.”

She also is actively involved in an Affinity Peer Group.

“This group has been an invaluable resource, offering support and insight as I navigate both personal and professional challenges — sharing strategies, experiences and encouragement along the way,” she said.
